Thanks for the info about "A Fate Worse than Death"

Another in the same vein I have read is "Captured By The Indians: 15 Firsthand Accounts, 1750-1870." by Frederick Drimmer. This is excellent.

I noticed Amazon has another "The Captured: A True Story of Abduction by Indians on the Texas Frontier" by Scott Zesch that looks very ineresting also.

Maybe the movie connection is that they should make movies of these things.

There's a newish book I've been meaning to get. It's called "A Fate Worse Than Death". It's about captives of western Indian tribes. That kind of stuff facinates me...then haunts me. Maybe that's why I haven't bought it yet.

Oh yeah, this is the movie board.

I heard Daniel Tosh saying how much better movies are than stage plays. He said the worst movie is better than the best play. "If I want to see people doing things that are possible, I'll go outside."

It's fair to say that Geronimo was a "war chief". Someone who led bands of fighters on raids, etc. They had different kinds of chiefs for different things.

I learned a lot more from the Geronimo show than from the Wyatt Earp one. I didn't know he wasn't a chief nor totally revered by his peeps.

The Apaches sure were some super, stealthy soldiers.

My mom is reading that book "Western Apache raiding and Warfare". She keeps asking me if it could possibly be true that people lived like that then?
Truth can be stranger than fiction.

Back in late 1900's or early 2000's, there was a mini series called GERONIMO.
Was it anyshere close to being true? It seemed to me like a documentary type movie.

All those guys could out walk a mountain goat. I've read several times that most of the people who settled the old west actually just walked out here. That's thousands of miles, walked.

On the subject of Geronimo and the Apaches I'm reading these two books on the Apache now. One is "Indeh", meaning the dead ancestors. This is a series of interviews and first person narratives by western Apaches of Geronimo's time, including many relatives of his. They relate their lives and adventures including a great deal of their struggle with the modern world.

The other book is "Western Apache Raiding & Warfare." This is a broader look at their culture in those days and really brings home how dramatic their lives really were. Some of the events of these people lives were incredible. Tales of several Indian women crossing hundreds of miles of desert on foot after escaping slavery to other tribes, details of various raids and how they lived, etc.

I ran across these books as part of my anthropology studies and they are both great reads and of the highest scientific quality. These books can be found on Amazon. Raiding and Warfare starts at $4.50 and Indeh around $10.

I haven't seen the documentary on "Geranimo".

But what I have seen in the past.. that was supposedly factual.. Geranimo was an amazing man.

BUT.. based on what I read/saw.. the guys that chased and caught him have to be given HUGE credit... those soldiers had HUGE BALLS.. stamina, determination and the ability to adapt.

Every body talks about Geranimo.. but the "no name" union soldiers that tracked him down and caught him don't get near enough credit for their effort of endurance and sacrifice.

I saw a true accounting of Wyatt's life on the History channel a couple of days ago.

I felt the same way as you did watching the PBS show. I wonder if they were the show.

Tonight PBS had two excellent documentary shows. First Wyatt Earp and then Geronimo. These two characters had really dramatic lives, more so than the fictional presentations would indicate.

I usually don't come onto this board because we don't go to the movies very often but did go tonight. My husband wanted to see "War Horse." It wasn't too bad of a movie although it wasn't what I thought it would be. I could hear folks sniffling during a couple scenes...I must be hard hearted cuz' it didn't choke me at all. Again, not too bad of a movie. I wasn't "wowed" but wasn't disappointed either.

I couldn't sleep for a while, so found this movie in English with Jimmy Stewart. He played an accordian and sang. He was working for the rail road. Sadly I missed the end of it. If I knew the name of it I would try to get a copy of it. It sort of looked like it was colorized, like back when they started doing that to some movies.

I watched "Real Steel" last night. I don't think it did real good in the theaters, and I can see why.

The acting was very bad.. the dialog was real bad.. the directing was bad and the screen play was cheesy. Shocking for a Steven Spielberg movie.

But in spite of all that I enjoyed the movie... for the robot boxing. That was pretty cool.
