boxing and full-contact karate training skills. Since 1963 Mckay has coached at
San Juan, Carolina, Fort Bliss, and his own Eastside Boxing Gym. He has also judged and

In 1967, Tom and the late coach, Sammy Burke, helped open the San Diego Sports Arena by bringing a hurriedly put together team to compete in the AAU National Championships. It was a sweet homecoming success as team member, Earl Large ,119, took the Gold Medal in his division and Mike Ortiz, 132 and barely experienced, grabbed Bronze by fighting to the semi-finals. And his offspring, Mike and Les McKay, were undefeated boxers. McKay is especially proud to have worked with Five-Time PKA Karate World Champion, Cliff 'Magic' Thomas and with the eccentric and wild heavyweight contender, Randall "Tex" Cobb, somewhat of an actor. And finally, McKay was inducted into The El Paso Boxing/Karate Hall Of Fame in 1997. Tom has a Scrap Book on our

at The Studio, 204 Palm Ave. in Imperial Beach., with Freddie Silvers and the amazing WIFF.
Later, after school some time, he moved to San Francisco and became part
of a band called "Flying Color". An Internet audio trivia
page describes it this way; "San Fransico's Flying Color was a band that deserved to be famous. With three quality
songwriters
(Richard Chase, Dale Duncan, and Hector Penalosa) and equally great material that recalled Badfinger, Dwight Twilley, and an earlier Bay Area band, the Flamin' Groovies, they seemed
destined for major label stardom during the late '80s. Choice cuts on their debut album Flying Color (Frontier, 1987) include Chase's "I'm Your Shadow", Duncan's "Dear Friend", and Penalosa's "Wise to Her Ways". Shortly after the release of the album, Richard Chase left the band, replaced by a young songwriter from New York state named Chris von Sneidern. Flying Color later recorded demos for a second album, but the band fell apart during the lengthy sessions and subsequently broke up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
